Liver detox vs. liver cleanse:

It must be understood that a liver detox is very different from a liver cleanse.  

Liver 'cleanses' won't significantly clean your liver. So, don't waste your money on those cleanses that claim to 'clean out your liver' or offer a '14-day cleanse.' 

Whether it's cayenne pepper and lemon juice with maple syrup or any other cleanse, they will not clean your liver, regardless of how long you use them. Extend this list to all those expensive kits with powdered herbs.

But supporting your natural detoxification process may be beneficial. 

 

Toxins bombardment on liver, 24/7:

There are innumerable toxins that your body is exposed to, including drugs, medication, and preservatives.

Xenobiotics are chemical substances that are foreign to an organism's body. They are typically not produced or expected to be present within the organism's natural biochemical pathways. 

Xenobiotics can include a wide range of compounds, such as drugs, environmental pollutants, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, food additives, industrial chemicals, plastics, petroleum products, mold, fungus, metabolic waste (like hydrogen per oxide), and toxins from smoking.

There are about six or seven thousand different chemicals, with about one hundred carcinogens, chemicals in vaping, caffeine, heavy metals, cleaning chemicals, alcohols, etc., that are constantly bombarding our body, 24/7, from every different angle.

 

Two phase detoxification of liver:

The liver has two phases of detoxification designed to eliminate toxins from the body by converting them into harmless water-soluble particles. 

When xenobiotics enter the body, they are metabolized and detoxified by various enzymes and pathways, primarily in the liver, to convert them into water-soluble substance.

 

Phase-I of liver detoxification:

Phase-I activates the process. It requires certain nutrients like folate, vitamin-C, Vitamin-B, and Calcium, etc., for the purpose.

Further, in phase-I, if you consume "Grape Fruit" juice, and you are also taking a medication, there is a certain chemical in grape fruit that will retain that drug longer in your system and it will make things more toxic for you. Phase-II of liver detoxification:

After phase-I is over, comes the phase-II, which does something called conjugation, where water soluble molecule is added to this compound.

Some people have a genetic problem with particular detoxification enzymes. This can make you more susceptible to damage from certain toxins. A DNA test can give you the information you need to avoid a certain toxin and better support detoxification.

Different enzymes are active in different part of the body, detoxifying, like in intestines, in lungs, in kidney, but liver is the primary area of detoxification.

In phase III detoxification, our body eliminates water-soluble chemicals. However, conditions such as constipation, dysbiosis (alterations in the gut microbiome), or other gut issues can affect liver function.

Beneficial bacteria play a role in eliminating these chemicals. Therefore, issues such as antibiotic use, yeast overgrowth, or disruptions in the gut microbiome can hinder detoxification processes.

 

Liver Detoxification and the Role of Bile:

Bile is a primary method of eliminating toxins, along with the urinary system. Obstructions in the bile duct, such as sludge or gallstones, can lead to toxin accumulation in the liver.
